Amsterdam, Netherlands

Welcome back! This time around I traveled to the Netherlands, pacifically the capital Amsterdam! This is a city that I have always wanted to travel to. Ideally, I wanted to travel with a significant other but then I thought why?! It’s not a “romantic” destination so at the end of 2017 I booked flights to go with a good friend Katherine.  Also, my other friend Fiona and her fiancé joined halfway through the trip.

We traveled 22nd to 26th of February 2018. Our flight carrier was with Easy Jet, surprisingly Ryan Air doesn’t fly directly to Amsterdam so this will defiantly be your cheapest option if you are traveling from the UK.

 

What I packed food wise before traveling:

  • Breakfast oats combination: 25g of protein, Chia seeds, raisins.
  • 3 packets of vegetable noodles
  • Oat biscuits
  • Ground coffee

The rest I was planning to get whilst there via supermarkets and coffee shops.

 

Wednesday 21st February:

Traveled down to London and arrived around 10:30pm at Katherine’s flat. She arrived back from traveling and having a very long day at work, we came to the mutual decision to head to bed and would catch-up properly in the morning.

What I ate on the train down:

  • Avocado sandwich with 2 bananas and a black coffee.

 

Thursday 22nd February 2018:

We both got up around 9:30am. Showered, got ready and had breakfast. With our flight at around 2:30pm, we had time to head out quickly to get food for the journey to save on cost and also ensure we have vegan options to eat. What we ended up getting between the two of us:

  • 2 different flavors of hummus, breadsticks, cucumber, carrots and packets of noodles to make at the airport.

Had food on the train journey to Gatwick as well at the airport and then court our flight.  After less than an hour we landed safely in Amsterdam. Backstory now about how we got our accommodation, a friend of Katherine’s father lives in Amsterdam and kindly let us have his separate room completely free! His flat was beautifully filled with paintings and artifacts, every room had something interesting to look at. We dropped our stuff off and went to the nearest supermarket to get some fresh food.

What we got:

  • Bread (for sandwiches)
  • Avocado
  • Hummus
  • Noodles
  • Canned Kidney beans
  • Sweet corn
  • Bananas
  • Oranges
  • Peanuts to snack on
  • Corn rice cakes
  • Stir-fry ingredients to have dinner

Got back to the flat, cooked our stir-fry dinner and headed to bed around midnight due to a heavy traveling day.

Friday 23rd February 2018

Itinerary for the day:

Breakfast, hire bikes and ride around Vondelpark. Visit the sex museum. Coffee and a cake, eat and chill out at the flat. Pre-drink and head out to Club NYX.

Food packed for the day:

Sandwich – avocado and hummus sandwich, 2 oranges, rice cakes and a banana.

After breakfast (Had one of my pre-made breakfast oats, with a coffee) we went to hire bikes, where you can hire either 3 hours or 24 hrs which can be renewed each time. We hired for 24hrs and it cost around 17 euros. There are a lot of these around Amsterdam which is not surprising as its a famous cycle-friendly city.

Food in-between cycling and going to visit the sex museum: We went to a famous known vegan Café restaurant, scored very high on trip advisor. I ordered Fried rice (consisting of grated carrots, sesame seeds, broccoli, yellow peppers, courgette, red onion and red cabbage. Served alongside some vegetable spring rolls.

Sex Museum: An educational and eye-opening experience to say the least. We learned about the evolution of sex and the culture throughout the ages across the world.

After we went to a mini coffee shop around the corner and I had a black coffee and a vegan carrot and walnut cake which I shared (shock horror) I also had some rice cakes that I packed and 3 oranges. This was the point of the day where we had to think that sort of night out we needed, after asking around a few friends of mine who have also visited Amsterdam recommend Club NYX, night out sorted!

We traveled back home, made some dinner which was another vegetable stir fry this time we throw some kidney beans in and a different pack of mixed vegetables. After eating cranked sometimes and drank a few bevies of 6..as we had the flat to ourselves for the night we definitely took advantage of the surround sound speakers.

Club NYX: An educational night out, had a ball, It was an R&B night. There was a mixture of people there however it did seem touristic no many locals. But I wouldn’t let that put you off! A bonus was that they even played 2 Cameroonian songs! (Where I was born and raised up to the age of 5 before moving to the UK)

 

Saturday 24th February 2018

Itinerary for the day:

Late breakfast due to a late night out. Went out and met up with Fiona and Harri and had lunch at the famous food court, Foodhallen. Went to the foam museum. Coffeehouse with Co. Dinner and drinks after. Went and had a look round the red light district.

Food packed that day:

Sandwich – avocado and hummus sandwich, 2 oranges, rice cakes and a banana.

Food court: Foodhallen: I got a Vietnamese tofu rice spring roll, 2 cut in half. I won’t lie this was a bit small for me so I also had 2 oranges and 3 rice cakes.  At the place, there are other vegan options you can try such as nachos with no cheese, packed with vegetables and guacamole. And Famous Buda bowls. Will recommend but it was quite expensive for the portion size so either prepare to spend a lot to get a good lunch in or only go for a quick food pick me up.

Dinner: I can’t even remember the name of the place we to but it was very delicious a good spicy pick me up curry! Had the coconut, carrot and onion curry served with spicy rice.

After Fiona and Harri went out, Katherine and I went out for drinks and a wander around the red light district to see what all the hype was about.

 

Sunday 25th February 2018

Itinerary for the day:

Wake up, have breakfast and chill out till midday before heading out. Went to Vegabond. Anne Frank house. Dinner out and drinks. Dinner out again with drinks on the side.

Food packed that day:

A full day of eating so only packed some bananas and oranges for snacks in-between.

Vegabond:

This place is a very famous place known for their vegan donuts. However, on arrival, all the donuts were sold out! So big tip is somewhere is famous for something, get there early! So I settled for banana bread which was a worthy substitute and delicious!

Anne Frank’s House:

Recommend to pre-buy tickets before you go! Sometimes on really busy periods, they will only accept pre-booking appointments. The whole experience was very educational and eye-opening. I couldn’t take any pictures so you will just have to take my word for it.

 

Late dinner :

At a small quirky restaurant called Boca’s where they mixed and matched their menu for us to make it vegan (their menu is a set menu). So as long as you asked really nicely they will kindly accommodate. Had their artichoke hummus with toasted bread served with grilled vegetables and chimichurri.

The second eating place was at Mastino Pizza, which I forgot to take a picture of what I ate. I have been to a few vegan pizza places in Manchester and this was defiantly one of the best places I have been to. They do use vegan cheese (which I don’t eat normally and I try to avoid) but I still enjoyed it and something to defiantly treat yourself with. After we went to a bar nearby, hand a few drinks and ended the night due to our flight the next day.

 

Monday 26th February 2018

Woke up in the morning and packed our bags. Our flight was around 2:30pm and the airport was only approx. 30 minutes journey way. We quickly met up with Fiona and Harri late bunch to catch up and say goodbye.

Headed to the airport s with a slight delay in our flight we finally landed in London and then I took the 2 hours journey back up to Manchester. Bed by 10:30pm with work early in the morning, no rest for the wicked.
